An Introduction to Tygon Tubing

Tygon tubing is a flexible polymer tubing that consists of a variety of materials and is used across a range of industries for specialized fluid transfer requirements. As Tygon is a brand, the exact composition of each type of tubing is kept secret, but the various products feature multiple layers of different materials. The brand is a registered trademark of French multinational Saint-Gobain Corporation and has been since the late 1930s. Tygon tubing products are produced in three countries but sold throughout the entire world. It is used in a diverse set of markets, including food and beverage, chemical processing, industrial, laboratory, medical, pharmaceutical, and semiconductor processing.

Many formulations of clear, flexible tygon tubing exist. The chemical resistance and physical properties vary from formulation to formulation, but all tubings are intended to be resistant to chemical attack such that it will handle practically any chemical, whether liquid, gas, or slurry. Though it is generally non-reactive, Tygon has been known to free carbon monoxide and is considered a carbon monoxide-releasing molecule, meaning it is specifically designed to release controlled amounts of carbon monoxide.

As stated, tygon tubing is flexible, tough, abrasion resistant, and non-aging, making it ideal for use in many industries. In aviation, it is ideal for hookup of airspeed pitot and static lines. However, it is not recommended for pressurized applications. Tygon tubing’s most common uses are in industrial applications. For example, Tygon F-4040-A is used in small engine fuel lines, recreational vehicles, and lubrication lines. It is translucent yellow for easy identification and flow monitoring. Furthermore, Tygon R-3400 UV Resistant Tubing remains flexible in ultraviolet (UV) environments and is frequently used in electrical insulation, ink, and adhesive dispensing, as well as fertilizer and pesticide dispensing. Its resistance to UV light, ozone, and weathering make it ideal for use in outdoor applications.

Tygon tubing is recognized as a critical part of fluid transport systems where it delivers unparalleled performance.
